Chapter Seventeen

The next afternoon, Willow was standing in front of Reuben in his office, glancing around nervously, her dark eyes wide with excitement and trepidation. Today they were going to practice being in love.

“Okay,” Reuben began, his voice warm and reassuring. “We’ll go over how a courting couple looks, focusing on comportment and gestures. Are you ready?”

She nodded slowly, her heart racing with anticipation. She knew this was an essential part of their plan to make it look like they were falling in love, but she couldn’t deny the fear that shot through her at the thought of acting out intimate moments with him. He made her heart flutter enough as it was! Was love the reason?

“First,” he said, clearing his throat, “let’s talk about holding hands.” He extended his hand toward her, palm up, and waited for her to place hers in his.

Her fingers trembled as they brushed against his strong, calloused palm, and she marveled at the warmth of his touch.

He gently closed his hand around hers, offering her a comforting smile. “When a couple is courting, they hold hands as a way to show affection and provide support.” He led her forward, into the examination room.

Willow’s mind raced with thoughts of how the townspeople would react to seeing them together like this. Would they truly believe they were, as he put it, falling for each other?

As if sensing her unease, Reuben gave her hand a supportive squeeze, his thumb stroking her knuckles softly. “Now, stealing glances is another important aspect of courting. When two people are falling in love, they often can’t help but look at each other when they think the other isn’t paying attention.”

He demonstrated by briefly turning his gaze from her, pretending to be engrossed in a tray of medical instruments near the examination table. Then, as if unable to resist, he stole a quick glance at her, his eyes meeting hers for just a moment before darting away again.

The sudden humor in the situation made her smile, the tension in her body dissipating slightly.

“See?” Reuben chuckled. “Not too difficult, is it?”

Willow shook her head, feeling a strange sense of relief wash over her. Perhaps with his guidance, she could learn how to navigate this complex world of courtship and love. Even if theirs was a lie. For now, though, she’d focus on the warmth of Reuben’s hand in hers and allow herself a fleeting moment of happiness.

He led her down the hall to the back door, then out to the backyard. The sun cast warm, golden rays upon them as they walked to the shade of an old oak tree. “Let’s practice out here for a while.”

She smiled and nodded. Hopefully no one would see them. She wasn’t ready for the town to witness their “courting” yet.

“Let’s see… ah, yes, eye contact,” Reuben went on. “It’s one of the most significant ways we communicate our feelings for someone, especially when words aren’t enough.” He gestured to her eyes. “When two people are in
